What people build around Terre Haute
The city sits on the Wabash, with farm ground across the rest of Vigo County.
Detached garages
Garages go up behind houses in town. Tubular steel is usually the answer.
Pole barns & shops
Non-livable pole barns and shops go up on rural lots. Tubular is hard to beat under sixty feet wide.
Farm buildings
Equipment storage and hay barns go up on farm ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Finished space
Steel truss is the fit here. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.
Permitting metal buildings in Terre Haute and Vigo County
The permit moves through three offices, two of them side by side on Oak Street.
Area Planning
- The accessory structure permit covers garages, pole barns, sheds, decks and patios.
- Applications can be emailed with a site plan, and the county ordinance gives the office five business days to decide.
- Area Planning is at 159 Oak Street. Call (812) 462-3354.
Health & Building Inspection
- Any construction that adds square footage takes an Improvement Location Permit through Area Planning, the Health Department and Building Inspection.
- Building Inspection, at 151 Oak Street, collects its fees and issues the permit. Call (812) 462-3365.
- Commercial buildings aren’t permitted online and need state-approved plans.
Floodplain & engineering
- Area Planning also issues permits in flood-prone areas.
- Under state law, a building used only for agriculture on the farm isn’t built to the building code.
- We provide the engineered drawings your permit needs.
A good site plan keeps all three steps moving. Vigo County’s permit runs through Area Planning, the Health Department and Building Inspection, and Area Planning has five business days to act. We send a complete site plan with the application so it doesn’t stall at the first step.
We also serve Seelyville, Riley, West Terre Haute, Brazil and Sullivan. See west & central Indiana or all of Indiana.
