What people build around Kenosha
City garages sit close to the lake, and the farm buildings go up west of the interstate.
Garages in town
In the city, a 16 ft height limit and lot coverage caps set the size, so we check the lot first.
Acreage shops
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.
Farm buildings
Machine sheds and hay storage go up in the county’s farm towns. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Commercial
Cold-formed suits permitted work along the I-94 corridor with a finished eave.

Permitting metal buildings in Kenosha and Kenosha County
Inside Kenosha
- Residential accessory buildings over 120 sq ft need a permit.
- Accessory buildings top out at 16 ft.
- In the RG-1, RG-2 and RS-3 districts, a garage can’t be larger than the house’s footprint.
What the city asks for
- New buildings and accessory buildings need a survey by a registered land surveyor.
- The code official can waive it when the lines and location can be verified another way.
Unincorporated towns
- In Brighton, Paris, Randall, Somers and Wheatland, a county zoning permit comes before the town building permit.
- It covers detached garages and farm buildings, and anything over 150 sq ft.
- Shoreland and floodplain rules come with the same county ordinance.
Out in the county, farm buildings need a zoning permit too. Kenosha County lists agricultural buildings alongside detached garages, and the county permit has to be issued before the town building inspector will act. We get the site plan right for the county first.
We also serve Racine, Pleasant Prairie, Bristol, Salem Lakes and Twin Lakes. See the Milwaukee area, Illinois or all of Wisconsin.
