What people build around Greenwood

Neighborhoods fill the city, and farm ground runs south toward Franklin.

Detached garages

Garages go up behind houses in town. Tubular steel is usually the answer.

Acreage shops

On lots over two acres in the city, one more accessory building is allowed per acre, up to five.

Farm buildings

Equipment storage and hay barns go up on farm ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Finished space

Steel truss is the fit here. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Greenwood and Johnson County

The city and the county each cap accessory buildings against the size of the house, very differently.

Inside Greenwood

  • An accessory building can go up only where the house already stands.
  • All accessory buildings together can reach 150% of the house’s enclosed square footage, or 400% for agricultural ones.
  • A detached garage sits at least 6 feet from the house. The permit fee is $0.10 a square foot, with a $50 minimum.

Unincorporated Johnson County

  • The new building plus existing accessory buildings have to stay under 50% of the house’s square footage.
  • The accessory building has to stay shorter than the house.
  • A heated and cooled accessory building or barn with finished space has to meet the energy code.

Farm & engineering

  • Under state law, a building used only for agriculture on the farm isn’t built to the building code.
  • Occupied buildings are Risk Category II wherever they sit.
  • We provide the engineered drawings your permit needs.

The city line can triple the size you’re allowed. With a 2,000 sq ft house, Greenwood allows up to 3,000 sq ft of accessory buildings. In unincorporated Johnson County, the same house tops out under 1,000. We check which side you’re on before we size the building.

We also serve Bargersville, Franklin, Whiteland, New Whiteland and Center Grove. See the Indianapolis metro or all of Indiana.
