What people build in Marana
Newer neighborhoods and open acreage sit side by side here, and the town’s own design criteria shape both.
Shops & garages
Marana rates termite risk moderate to heavy. A steel frame takes that off the list. Under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer.
RV & boat storage
Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.
Horse barns & hay
Barns, shade and hay storage go up on horse properties. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Marana
The town’s codes
- The Town Council adopted the 2024 building codes on June 17, 2025.
- The energy code stays on the 2018 edition.
- Marana adopts its own codes, separate from Tucson and Pima County.
When you need a permit
- One-story storage sheds up to 200 sq ft don’t need a building permit. The town raised that from 120.
- Anything larger, a garage or a shop, needs one.
Design criteria
- Residential wind design is 115 mph, with no ground snow load and no frost depth.
- Flood hazard is checked with Marana Floodplain Management.
- Development Services is at 11555 W. Civic Center Dr., (520) 382-2600.
Outdoor lights are part of the building code here. Marana’s building code takes in the town’s 2021 outdoor lighting code, so wall packs and floodlights on a shop have to meet it too. Pick the fixtures when you plan the building, not after.
We also serve Oro Valley, Picture Rocks, Avra Valley and Red Rock. See Tucson & southern Arizona or all of Arizona.
