What people build in Montana

Ranch ground, river valleys and mountain towns all ask a lot of a building, and snow asks the most.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow at your address.

Machine sheds & hay barns

Equipment and hay storage go up on ranch and farm ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Equipment storage

Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

What matters for metal buildings in Montana?

Who permits it

  • Cities, counties and towns can run certified building programs, usually within city limits.
  • Everywhere else falls under the State Building Codes Bureau.

Farm, ranch & home

  • Farm and ranch buildings don’t need a state building permit, and neither do homes with fewer than five units.
  • Inside a certified city, the local program can still require one.

Snow

  • Montana law sets a minimum design roof snow load of 30 psf, after allowed reductions.
  • Outside certified areas, ground snow comes from the ASCE 7 Hazard Tool for the exact site.

Footings

  • Outside certified areas, footings for single-story wood or metal-frame buildings go at least 3 feet below grade.
  • Multistory and masonry buildings go at least 4 feet.

In Montana, the city limit decides who reviews the building. Inside a certified city, the city permits it and sets the loads. Step outside and the state takes over, or a farm building may need no permit at all. We check the address before anything is drawn.

Local guides for Montana

We deliver and install anywhere in Montana. These guides cover the permit rules around the state’s larger towns, and we check the rules for every other address the same way.
