What people build in Polson
Lake lots and Mission Valley farm ground, each with its own uses for a building.
Boat & RV storage
Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.
Machine sheds & hay barns
Equipment and hay storage go up on valley farm ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Polson
Inside Polson
- The city’s certified program covers building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical work within city limits.
- Snow loads come from the building official. City building office: 406-883-8214.
Lake County ground
- Lake County isn’t on the state’s list of certified building programs, so the state has jurisdiction outside city limits.
- Farm and ranch buildings, and homes with fewer than five units, don’t need a state permit.
Snow & footings outside town
- Ground snow comes from the ASCE 7 Hazard Tool, with a 30 psf minimum roof snow load.
- Single-story metal-frame footings go at least 3 feet below grade.
In town, the city reviews it. Outside, the state does. Polson handles every permit inside city limits, while Lake County ground falls under the state, where a farm building may need no permit at all. Either way, we design to the snow and footing depth at your address.
We also serve Ronan, Pablo, Finley Point and Big Arm. See Kalispell & the Flathead or all of Montana.
