What people build in Arizona

Desert acreage, ranch ground and the mountain towns all ask different things of a building.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer. Insulating it doesn’t change that.

RV & boat storage

Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.

Ranch & farm buildings

Hay barns, equipment storage and livestock shelter go up on ranch ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

See what a steel building costs for real per-square-foot ranges.

What matters for metal buildings in Arizona?

No statewide code

  • Arizona doesn’t set a building code for private construction. Cities adopt their own.
  • Counties may adopt one for zoned unincorporated land, and may exempt areas zoned rural or unclassified.

Farm & ranch ground

  • State law keeps county zoning off farming, ranching and stock raising.
  • Each county runs its own process. Maricopa and Mohave require five or more contiguous acres classified as agricultural, and a certificate before you build.

Elevation sets the snow

  • Benson’s design criteria step from no ground snow below 4,000 ft to 20 psf between 4,000 and 5,000 ft.
  • Coconino County sets snow load parcel by parcel, and anything over 70 psf requires engineered plans.

Living or working in it

  • A building people live or work in is Risk Category II wherever it sits.
  • Farm exemptions don’t cover buildings used as homes.

In Arizona, the same building can need a different frame two hours apart. The low desert carries little or no snow, while high country loads are set lot by lot. Add a different code in every city and county, and the address decides more than the dimensions do. We check it before anything is drawn.

Local guides for Arizona

We deliver and install anywhere in Arizona. These guides cover the permit rules around the state’s larger towns, and we check the rules for every other address the same way.

Building somewhere that isn’t listed? Tell us the address and we’ll confirm who permits it and what applies. See our whole service area.
