What people build in Queen Creek
Which zoning district your lot is in shapes the building almost as much as what goes inside it.
Barns & workshops on rural lots
In the rural districts, a barn or workshop doesn’t have to match the house’s design, only its color. Under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer.
Garages in the neighborhoods
In suburban and urban districts, a detached garage has to match the house’s design, materials, roof type and color. Cold-formed brings a finished eave.
RV & boat storage
A tall door is usually what pushes a building past 15 ft, and that changes where it can sit on the lot.
HOA neighborhoods
An HOA can set stricter standards than the town, and can prohibit a building outright. Check before you design.

Permitting metal buildings in Queen Creek
When you need a permit
- Detached buildings under 200 sq ft don’t need a building permit, but still have to meet setbacks.
- Plans have to follow the adopted residential code or be designed by an Arizona registrant.
- Every permitted building needs a plot plan and elevations.
Where it can sit
- Not in the required front yard, and it has to meet the side-yard setback for your district.
- Accessory buildings can cover up to 30% of the rear yard.
- Outside the buildable area, the height limit is 15 ft.
Who to call
- Town lots sit in both Maricopa and Pinal counties, but the Town permits either way.
- Planning: 480-358-3092. Building Safety: 480-358-3050.
Decide the door before the height. Under 15 ft, a detached building can sit 5 ft from the rear property line. Any taller and it has to meet the full rear-yard setback for your district, which can push it well into the yard. A tall RV door is usually what tips it over.
We also serve San Tan Valley, Gilbert, Mesa and Florence. See Phoenix & the Valley or all of Arizona.
