What people build around Flagstaff
At seven thousand feet, snow decides more about the building than anything else.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow at your address.
Equipment storage
Plows, trucks and trailers need a wide door. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.
Barns & hay
Barns and hay storage go up on ranch ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Flagstaff and Coconino County
Inside Flagstaff today
- The city enforces a 60 psf ground snow load.
- Footings go 30 inches below grade, and ice barrier underlayment is required.
- Building Safety is at 211 W. Aspen Ave.
New codes in 2027
- The City Council adopted the 2024 codes on October 6, 2026.
- Permit applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027 have to meet them.
- The package raises the residential ground snow load from 60 to 70 psf.
Coconino County
- Snow load comes from the county’s own snow study or the ASCE Hazard Tool, parcel by parcel.
- Over 70 psf, the county requires engineered plans.
- Community Development is at 2500 N. Fort Valley Rd., (928) 679-8850.
Apply before or after January 1, and the snow load changes. A Flagstaff building permitted under today’s code is designed to 60 psf. Apply in 2027 and it’s 70. If your timeline straddles the new year, we’ll price both so a late application doesn’t turn into a redesign.
We also serve Doney Park, Munds Park, Parks and Winslow. See all of Arizona.
