What people build in Whitefish
Mountain-town lots and forest ground, where snow and wildfire both shape the building.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow at your address.
Boat & RV storage
Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.
Equipment storage
Plows, trucks and trailers need a wide door and a frame built for heavy winters. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Whitefish
Inside Whitefish
- Permits are required for all new construction within city limits, under the 2021 codes and the 2021 Wildland-Urban Interface Code.
- The city provides its design criteria, including snow load, on request. Building official: 406-863-2410.
Applying
- New construction and additions include a fire risk assessment under the WUI code.
- Residential plans show the snow load, Seismic zone D1 and 110 mph wind, along with an erosion control plan.
Flathead County ground
- Outside city limits, the State Building Codes Bureau has jurisdiction.
- Farm and ranch buildings, and homes with fewer than five units, don’t need a state permit.
Wildfire rules shape the building here. Whitefish enforces the wildland-urban interface code, and new buildings start with a fire risk assessment. Steel framing and metal roofing and siding don’t burn, which suits that code well, but the assessment can still affect other details. We plan for it from the start.
We also serve Olney, Eureka and the Whitefish Lake area. See Kalispell & the Flathead or all of Montana.
