What people build in Belgrade

New neighborhoods and valley acreage sit side by side, and the zoning differs between them.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.

RV & boat storage

Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.

Barns & hay

Barns and hay storage go up on the acreage around town. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Belgrade

The city’s criteria

  • Belgrade designs to 46 psf ground snow and 41 psf roof snow, with 115 mph wind.
  • Footings go 36 inches deep for one story and 48 inches for two. Ice barrier underlayment is required.
  • The city issues building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing permits. Building Department: 406-388-3560.

Applying

  • Plans have to be complete at submittal. The city doesn’t accept deferred plans or documents.
  • Where applicable, plans and structural calculations are stamped by a Montana licensed design professional.

Size & placement

  • Residential accessory buildings under 200 sq ft don’t need a permit.
  • A garage or accessory building within 3 feet of the house counts as attached.
  • Buildings in the R-1, R-2, R-2M and R-2D districts top out at 24 feet.

Check the height before you pick the door. In Belgrade’s residential districts, buildings top out at 24 feet. A tall RV door and a steep roof can run into that limit, so we size the eave and pitch to fit before anything is ordered, and submit a complete package the first time.

We also serve Churchill, Amsterdam and Four Corners. See Bozeman & the Gallatin Valley or all of Montana.
