What people build in Lolo
Valley lots and creek-side acreage, with the snow load changing as the ground climbs.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow at your site.
Equipment storage
Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.
Barns & hay
Barns and hay storage go up on the acreage. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Lolo
County jurisdiction
- Lolo is unincorporated, and Missoula County runs its own certified building program.
- County Building Division: 406-258-3723.
The cover sheet
- Permit plans list the design criteria on a cover sheet: code year, site-specific ground snow, 105 mph wind, Seismic D0 and risk category.
- Ground snow comes from the ASCE 7-22 Hazard Tool, with a 30 psf roof minimum.
Agricultural buildings
- They house equipment, hay, grain, livestock or other farm products, and aren’t lived in, used to process products or open to the public.
- They fall in Risk Category I, and on land classified as agricultural they can be exempt from a permit by application.
What counts as an agricultural building matters. Missoula County draws the line narrowly: storage for equipment, hay, grain or livestock, not a place people live, process products or visit. Stay inside it and the building carries a lower risk category and may qualify for an exemption. We design to the use you actually have.
We also serve Florence, Clinton and Frenchtown. See Missoula & the Bitterroot or all of Montana.
