What people build in Hamilton

Horse property and ranch ground fill the valley, and the buildings work for a living.

Horse barns & hay

Barns and hay storage go up on horse property and ranch ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.

Equipment storage

Settle the door before the footprint. Every two feet of eave above twelve adds roughly five percent to the frame.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Hamilton

Inside Hamilton

  • The city enforces building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes on the 2021 editions.
  • Building inspector: (406) 880-5832. City offices: (406) 363-3316.

Applying

  • The city doesn’t accept deferred submittals, and plans list the ASCE design loads.
  • Agricultural and ranch buildings are exempt unless the building official finds an undue risk to the public.
  • Work started without a permit is charged double the permit fee.

Ravalli County ground

  • Ravalli County isn’t on the state’s list of certified building programs, so the state has jurisdiction outside town limits.
  • Farm and ranch buildings don’t need a state permit. Single-story metal-frame footings go at least 3 feet deep.

Get the permit before the steel. Hamilton charges double the permit fee for work started without one, and it won’t take deferred submittals. We assemble the complete package, design loads included, so the permit is in hand before anything is set on site.

We also serve Corvallis, Victor, Darby and Pinesdale. See Missoula & the Bitterroot or all of Montana.
