What people build around Rochester

City lots, growing small towns and some of the state’s best farm ground.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.

Machine sheds

Equipment storage on southeast Minnesota farm ground. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Commercial buildings

Shops, warehouses and service buildings for a growing region. Red iron carries the wide spans.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings around Rochester

Inside Rochester

  • Any garage or shed over 200 sq ft needs a building permit. Smaller ones still need a zoning certificate.
  • Both must meet zoning for setbacks, height and size. Building Safety: 507-328-2600.

Olmsted County’s building official

  • The county administers the building code in Byron, Stewartville, Eyota and Chatfield, and in Eyota, Marion and Quincy townships.
  • County permits need the contractor’s Minnesota license number. Allow 10 working days, and expect extra rules in floodplains.

Snow & frost

  • Olmsted and its neighboring counties use a 50 psf ground snow load.
  • Footings go at least 3½ feet deep unless a soils engineer determines otherwise.

Around Rochester, the town decides who issues the permit. Inside Rochester, the city does. In Byron, Stewartville and several nearby cities and townships, Olmsted County’s building official does, and some of those cities still handle zoning first. We sort out both before anything is submitted.

We also serve Eyota, Chatfield, Pine Island and Kasson. See all of Minnesota.
