What people build in Georgetown
Growing neighborhoods, the historic old town and acreage just outside the city limits.
Detached garages
Sized to a quarter of the home inside the city. Tubular steel suits the size.
Carports
Inside the city, carports count as accessory buildings and need a permit too.
Shops on acreage
Outside the city limits, larger shops and barns are common. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Permitting metal buildings in Georgetown
Size & placement
- An accessory building can’t exceed 25% of the square footage of the home on the lot.
- It must share a lot with a home. On adjacent lots under one owner, it goes in the rear yard of the lot with the home.
Foundation
- An engineer must certify the foundation was inspected and meets the engineered design, loads and soil conditions.
- The exception is a building under 200 sq ft that’s portable on skids.
Site rules
- The city’s impervious cover limits apply to the building and any new paving.
- Lots in the Old Town or Downtown overlay carry additional requirements.
In Georgetown, the house sets the size of the shop. Inside the city, an accessory building can be no more than a quarter of the home’s square footage, and its foundation needs an engineer’s sign-off. We size the building to your home and plan for the foundation certification from the start.
We also serve Round Rock, Leander, Liberty Hill and Jarrell. See all of Texas.
