Permitting metal buildings in Missouri City
What’s allowed
- Garages, and barns on lots of 20,000 sq ft or more, are exempt from the accessory size and height limits but follow setback and screening rules.
- Other storage structures: one per home, behind the house, up to 80 sq ft and 6 feet tall, with the rear yard enclosed by a 6-foot opaque fence or wall.

- A building permit is needed when a structure has structural, electrical, plumbing or mechanical components.
- Plans include a site plan, floor and roof plans, elevations, structural plans and structural or truss calculations, as applicable.
