What people build around Wausau
City garages, dairy farms and shops for snowmobiles, boats and equipment all go up in the north woods.
Garages in town
In the city, placement on the lot sets the footprint, so we check the yards before sizing.
Acreage shops
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, insulated or not.
Farm buildings
Machine sheds and hay storage go up across Marathon County. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Commercial
Cold-formed suits permitted, occupied buildings with a finished eave.

Permitting metal buildings in Wausau and Marathon County
Inside Wausau
- Every detached garage, lean-to or storage building needs a permit, prefab and off-site built included.
- Building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing permits are applied for separately, online.
Placement in the city
- A detached building sits 5 ft from the house, unless it’s built to the state code’s fire rating.
- It can cover no more than half of any required yard, and none go in the front or street yard.
Town of Rib Mountain
- Garage side walls top out at 12 ft, and door openings at 10 ft.
- Taller walls or doors take a conditional use approval.
Next door to Wausau, the door height can be capped. In the Town of Rib Mountain, a garage door opening tops out at 10 ft unless it’s approved as a conditional use. If you’re storing a camper or tall equipment, we sort out the door before the walls.
We also serve Rib Mountain, Weston, Schofield, Mosinee and Merrill. See western and central Wisconsin or all of Wisconsin.
