What people build in Albuquerque

New Mexico’s largest city, from valley acreage to the foothills.

Detached garages

Behind the front setback, 10 feet from the house. Tubular steel suits most garages.

Workshops

Sized to the side and rear yards. Steel truss suits a finished interior.

Storage buildings

On interior lots, accessory buildings need no side or rear setback.

Commercial buildings

Shops and warehouses in the city’s mixed-use and industrial zones. Red iron takes over for wide clear spans.

Permitting metal buildings in Albuquerque

Size

  • All accessory buildings together can cover no more than 25% of the combined side and rear yards.
  • None can sit in the required front setback.

Height & spacing

  • A building inside a required setback can’t be taller than the house, and must meet the city’s solar access limits.
  • Keep 10 feet from any building with living quarters, and 5 feet between other accessory buildings.

Permits

  • Accessory buildings over 120 sq ft need a permit, with elevations showing every wall with openings and the overall height.
  • The city designs to Seismic Design Category C. An accessory building can’t be used as a dwelling.

In Albuquerque, the yard sets the size. Accessory buildings are capped at a quarter of your side and rear yards combined, not a fixed number. We measure the yards first and size the building to fit before you apply.

We also serve Corrales, Los Lunas, Bernalillo and the East Mountains. See all of New Mexico.
