What people build in South Dakota

Farm and ranch ground, growing cities and Black Hills acreage, each asking something different of a building.

Machine sheds

Equipment storage on farms and ranches. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Shops & garages

Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow and wind at your address.

Barndominiums

Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.

Commercial buildings

Shops, warehouses and service buildings, designed to the 2021 International Building Code.

What matters for metal buildings in South Dakota?

Commercial buildings

  • Any local building code must follow the 2021 International Building Code.
  • Where a town or county has no code, the 2021 IBC is still the design standard for buildings started after July 1, 2021.

Farms & ranches

  • The state design standard doesn’t apply to farmsteads, which state law defines as a farm or ranch and every structure on the land.
  • County zoning can still limit the size and placement of accessory buildings.

Homes & their buildings

  • Homes and their accessory buildings are also outside the state standard. Cities may adopt the 2021 International Residential Code instead.
  • A city can’t be stricter than the 2021 IRC or require sprinklers. Builders of new homes must give buyers an energy-efficiency disclosure.

In South Dakota, a farm building may never be reviewed by anyone. State law exempts farmsteads from its design standard, so the engineering is between you and your supplier. We design every building to the snow and wind at its address, whether or not anyone checks.
