What people build in Meade County
Foothill acreages, Sturgis neighborhoods and the wide ranch country to the east.
Ranch buildings
Hay, cattle and equipment storage, built to the IBC or IRC and inspected. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Shops & garages
On foothill acreages around Piedmont and Black Hawk. Tubular steel suits most garages.
Cabins & guest space
Any accessory building used for sleeping needs a permit, whatever its size. Steel truss suits a finished interior.
Sturgis garages
Some city districts cap accessory buildings at one story or 18 feet.

Permitting metal buildings in Meade County
Outside the cities
- Accessory buildings of 200 sq ft and up need a county permit and must meet the International Residential or Building Code.
- Portable sheds under 200 sq ft, with no utilities or foundation, are exempt.
Inspections & licensing
- The county inspects construction on unincorporated land, and a new building needs a certificate of occupancy before it’s used.
- Contractors working in the county must hold a Meade County license.
Inside Sturgis
- Sheds over 144 sq ft need a city permit, and contractors must be licensed with the city.
- Collapsible carports and canopy shelters aren’t allowed. Electrical work is inspected by the state.
In Meade County, the building gets inspected even out on the ranch. Unlike much of rural South Dakota, the county inspects construction outside city limits and issues a certificate of occupancy. We supply code-rated drawings with every building so inspections go smoothly.
We also serve Sturgis, Piedmont, Black Hawk and Faith. See all of South Dakota.
