What people build in Hobbs
An oil town on the Llano Estacado, close to the Texas line.
Detached garages
Permitted and placed to the street’s setback. Tubular steel suits most garages.
Oilfield shops
Room for trucks, rigs and parts. Red iron takes over for wide clear spans.
Workshops
A finished space at home. Steel truss suits a finished interior.
Commercial buildings
With no zoning districts, a use is allowed by right, though the building code still applies.

Permitting metal buildings in Hobbs
No zoning, still rules
- Hobbs has not adopted a zoning ordinance, so there are no zoning districts or use limits.
- Subdivision rules, the Major Thoroughfare Plan, flood and fire zones and the building code all still apply, including setbacks.
Setbacks
- Front setbacks follow the street’s class under the thoroughfare plan; a minor residential street calls for 21 feet.
- Variances go to the Hobbs Planning Board.
Permits
- Any building or structure in the city or its extraterritorial zone needs a permit, except one-story sheds of 120 sq ft or less.
- The site plan shows easements, setbacks and any neighboring structures within 10 feet of the property lines.
In Hobbs, there’s no zoning map to check. The city has never adopted zoning, so the rules that shape your building come from the street you’re on, the flood map and the building code. We check all three for your address before we quote.
We also serve Lovington, Eunice and Jal. See all of New Mexico.
