What people build in Las Cruces

New Mexico’s second city, beneath the Organ Mountains, and the farm country of the Mesilla Valley.

Garages & carports

The new code gives more flexibility on carport design. Tubular steel suits most garages.

Workshops

Shade and ventilation for the desert sun. Steel truss suits a finished interior.

Farm buildings

Equipment and orchard storage in the valley. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.

Casitas

Accessory dwelling units are allowed by right in every residential zone under the new code.

Permitting metal buildings in Las Cruces

Inside the city

  • Realize Las Cruces replaced the city’s 2001 zoning code, with more flexibility on building height and carports.
  • Design standards now live in a separate Technical Manual. Development Services handles every request.

Permits

  • Under state rules, one-story sheds of 120 sq ft or less skip the building permit; anything larger needs one.
  • Every building still has to meet its zone’s setbacks.

Outside the city

  • In Doña Ana County’s T2, R5 and R5L zones, accessory buildings can total 5,000 sq ft or 10% of the lot, whichever is less.
  • They must sit at least 10 feet from every other building.

In Las Cruces, the rules just changed. The city’s first new development code in nearly 25 years took effect in 2025, so older advice may be out of date. We check your address against the current code, or the county’s if you’re outside city limits.

We also serve Mesilla, Santa Teresa, Anthony and Hatch. See all of New Mexico.
