What people build in North Dakota
Valley farm ground, growing cities and western ranch and oil country, each asking something different of a building.
Machine sheds
Equipment storage on farms and ranches. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the snow and wind at your address.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.
Commercial buildings
Shops, warehouses and service buildings, designed to the 2021 International Building Code.
See what a steel building costs for real per-square-foot ranges.
What matters for metal buildings in North Dakota?
Who enforces the code
- Cities, townships and counties choose whether to enforce a building code. Any that do must adopt the state code, and may amend it for local needs.
- A county can enforce it wherever no city or township does.
Farms & ranches
- A building used for agricultural purposes is exempt from the state building code, unless people live in it or the public uses it.
- State law counts farming, ranching, dairying and animal husbandry as agricultural purposes. Local zoning can still apply.
Contractors
- Work on any project over $4,000 takes a contractor license from the Secretary of State.
- No code in the state can require sprinklers in a single-family home or duplex.
In North Dakota, the rules depend on who’s enforcing. One township inspects every building; the next has no code official at all, and farm buildings are exempt either way. We design every building to the snow and wind at its address, whether or not anyone checks.
