What people build around San Antonio
Suburban lots, Hill Country acreage and ranch land, often just outside the city limits.
Barndominiums
Steel truss is the fit. Drywall attaches to the frame, so there’s no second wall to build.
Shops & garages
Unfinished and under sixty feet wide, tubular steel is usually the answer, sized for the wind at your address.
Ranch buildings
Hay barns, equipment storage and covered pens. Red iron takes over past eighty feet.
Commercial buildings
Shops, warehouses and service buildings. Outside city limits, these go through the county Fire Marshal.

Permitting metal buildings around San Antonio
Unincorporated Bexar County
- There’s no county zoning. Building permits cover commercial, public and multifamily buildings, through the Fire Marshal’s Office.
- Home permits are voluntary, usually when an HOA or a lender requires one. A septic permit may still apply.
Commercial permits
- Public Works signs off first. Then two plan sets: site plan, floor plan, all four elevations, electrical and HVAC layouts.
- The county reviews to the 2021 International Codes, within 30 days. Construction must start within 180 days of the permit.
Near a city
- In the extraterritorial jurisdiction of San Antonio or Helotes, the city may enforce its own requirements on top of the county’s.
- Inside city limits, the city permits and inspects.
Around San Antonio, a home or shop outside the city may never see an inspector. The county has no authority over residential construction unless you ask for a permit. Your lender or HOA may, though, so we engineer and document every building as if it will be reviewed.
