Permitting metal buildings in Houma
Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government issues the permit for Houma and the rest of the parish, and the flood map or the street sets how high the floor goes.
Placement
- Accessory structures go in the rear yard, at least 10 feet from the main structure and 5 feet from side and rear lot lines.
- They can’t sit in a utility or drainage servitude, or in a required front or side yard.
Size & height
- In residential districts, accessory structures can cover no more than 30% of the required rear yard.
- No accessory structure may be taller than the main structure.
Permits & elevation
- The parish requires a building permit before an accessory structure goes up; only small sheds outside the floodplain are exempt.
- In the floodplain, an elevation certificate is due with the application and again at completion, before utilities connect.
- Outside the flood zone, new floors must sit at least 18 inches above the highest crown of the adjacent street.
In Houma, elevation comes with the permit. Every building’s floor height is set by the flood map or the street in front of it. We set the slab height from your elevation certificate or the street crown before the foundation is poured.
Work in the Houma Historic District needs separate review. We also serve Thibodaux, Raceland and the rest of the bayou region. See all of Louisiana.
