Permitting metal buildings in Lafayette

Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Codes Division issues the permit, and for a metal building, the engineering paperwork matters as much as where it sits.

Metal & pole buildings

  • A metal building with steel columns, beams, girts and purlins, a pre-engineered building or a pole barn needs a permit, a floor plan and engineer-stamped plans with wind load certification.

Residential permits

  • Almost any structure tied to a home needs a residential permit, including carports, sheds, gazebos and RV covers.
  • Setbacks must meet the Development Division’s requirements.

Exemptions

  • A one-story shed of 120 sq ft or less on a movable foundation, like piers or skids, doesn’t need a building permit.
  • It still has to meet setbacks and any drainage or traffic review.

In Lafayette, the wind load is on paper first. The city asks for engineer-stamped plans with wind load certification on every metal building and pole barn. Our buildings come engineered for the wind at your address, with the stamped plans the permit desk needs.

We also serve New Iberia, Breaux Bridge, Opelousas and the rest of Acadiana. See all of Louisiana.
