What people build in Phenix City
A river city with a new zoning ordinance that allows tall accessory buildings but keeps them out of the front yard.
Detached garages
Out of the front yard, at least 5 feet from the rear and side lines and 10 feet from other buildings.
Workshops
Up to 35 feet tall. In some residential districts, buildings over 15 feet tall need extra setback from side and rear lines.
Trailer & RV storage
Vehicles and trailers can be kept in an enclosed accessory building that sits behind the front building line.
Storage buildings
In some residential districts, storage buildings can’t sit forward of the rear building line of the house.
We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.
Permitting metal buildings in Phenix City
Phenix City’s 2025 ordinance allows accessory buildings up to 35 feet, behind the house and away from the lot lines.
Placement
- Accessory structures can’t go in the required front yard, and they can’t be built before the house.
- On corner lots, they meet the front setback on each street frontage.
Size & height
- Accessory structures can be up to 35 feet tall and can cover no more than 30% of the required rear yard.
- In some residential districts, they can’t extend forward of the house’s rear building line, and those over 15 feet tall set back farther from side and rear lines.
Setbacks & use
- They sit at least 5 feet from the rear and side lot lines and 10 feet from any other structure on the lot.
- Accessory structures can’t include living quarters, except where accessory dwellings are specifically allowed.
In Phenix City, the height limit is generous but the placement isn’t. A 35-foot limit leaves room for an RV garage, but the building has to sit behind the house, and some districts push it behind the back of the house. The permit application asks for a site plan showing the setbacks, so we’ll lay it out with you first.
Phenix City reaches into Lee County, and land outside city limits is permitted by the county. We also serve Opelika. See all of Alabama.
