What people build in Boise

The capital city, between the Boise River and the foothills.

Detached garages

Off an alley, under 1,000 sq ft and 22 feet, they can sit on the alley line.

Workshops

Larger shops follow the zone’s setbacks, like 15 feet in the rear in R-1C.

Storage buildings

Up to 500 sq ft and under 14 feet, 3 feet off the side line.

Garden sheds

200 sq ft or less needs no building permit outside the floodplain.

We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.

Permitting metal buildings in Boise

Boise’s zoning code sets where an accessory building can sit, and the Building Division permits anything over 200 sq ft.

Setbacks

  • Most accessory buildings follow the zone’s setbacks, such as 5 feet on the side and 15 feet in the rear in R-1C.
  • In residential zones, buildings from 121 to 500 sq ft and under 14 feet tall can sit 3 feet from the side line and 9 feet from the rear.

Small sheds & alleys

  • Sheds under 120 sq ft and under 7 feet tall can sit 3 feet from the side and rear lines.
  • Alley-loaded garages under 1,000 sq ft and 22 feet to the peak are exempt from setbacks along the alley.

Permits & design loads

  • A detached garage or shed over 200 sq ft needs a building permit, and so does any shed in a floodplain.
  • The city designs for a 20 psf ground snow load, a 25 psf minimum roof snow load and a 24-inch frost depth.

In Boise, staying small buys you yard. A building up to 500 sq ft and under 14 feet tall can sit 3 feet off the side line, while anything bigger follows the zone’s full setbacks. We’ll size the building and its walls to fit the spot you have in mind.

We also serve Garden City, Eagle, Meridian and the rest of Ada County. See all of Idaho.
