Permitting metal buildings in Kuna
Kuna requires a building permit for garages and storage buildings, and city code exempts true farm buildings from the building code.
Permits
- Accessory structures such as garages and storage buildings need a building permit; detached storage under 200 sq ft is exempt.
- Anything attached to the house needs a permit, and so do fences.
Farm exemption
- Barns, stables, livestock and poultry buildings, and farm equipment storage are exempt when used only for agriculture on land the Ada County Assessor treats as agricultural.
- They still need a site permit, must meet setbacks, and must meet the code’s snow, wind, frost and seismic requirements.
What doesn’t qualify
- Shops, machinery repair buildings and garages for personal or road-licensed vehicles don’t qualify, even on farm ground.
- Switching an exempt building to another use takes a building permit with engineered plans.
In Kuna, a shop isn’t a barn. The city’s farm exemption leaves out shops, repair buildings and garages, even on agricultural land. We help you settle how the building will be used from the start, so the permit path matches how you’ll actually use it.
