Permitting metal buildings in Baton Rouge
The City-Parish issues the permit, and its Unified Development Code decides where an accessory building can sit and how big it can be.
Location
- Accessory structures more than 10 feet from the house go in the rear yard and stay out of required setbacks.
- Any accessory structure over 200 sq ft needs a permit.
Low buildings
- A structure under 14 feet tall can sit as close as 2 feet to a side lot line and 5 feet to the rear lot line.
Size
- An accessory structure can’t exceed 1,000 sq ft or cover more than 30% of the rear yard.
- Larger buildings go to the Metropolitan Board of Adjustment for approval.
In Baton Rouge, 14 feet buys you the lot line. Keep a building under 14 feet and it can sit 2 feet off the side line, freeing up the yard. We size the walls and roof pitch to stay under that line when space is tight.
We also serve Zachary, Central, Denham Springs and the rest of the capital region. See all of Louisiana.
