Permitting metal buildings in Caddo Parish
The parish sets the rules for unincorporated land under its Unified Development Code, and state law decides which buildings fall outside the construction code.
Height & coverage
- Detached accessory structures can be up to 18 feet tall.
- Agricultural structures on a lot in farm use are exempt from that limit.
- Accessory structures count toward the lot’s building and impervious coverage limits.
Guest houses
- One accessory dwelling unit is allowed per lot, no taller than the house.
- It’s capped at 60% of the house’s floor area or 1,800 sq ft, whichever is less, and goes in the rear yard, 10 feet from lot lines and the house.
State exemptions
- State law bars parishes from enforcing the state construction code on farm structures and on hunting or fishing camps.
- Residential accessory buildings up to 500 sq ft are exempt too, where design wind speeds fall below the statute’s limits.
In Caddo Parish, a working barn gets room to grow. Farm buildings escape the 18-foot cap and the state building code. We still engineer every barn for the wind and load it will see, because exempt doesn’t mean unbuilt.
