Garages
At least 10 feet from side lines, 25 feet from the rear line and 66 feet from the center of a county road.
Waterfront buildings
100 feet back from the high-water mark. Structures within 500 feet of a lake, river or waterway also need state approval.
Small sheds

Permitting metal buildings in Bay Mills Township
Bay Mills splits permitting between the township, Chippewa County and the state.
Who permits
- The Bay Mills Township Zoning Administrator issues the zoning permit, and the Chippewa County Building Department issues the building permit.
- Wells and septic go through the Chippewa County Health Department, driveways and culverts through the county road commission, and work near water through the state’s environmental agency, EGLE.
Setbacks
- 66 feet from the center of a county road, 25 feet from the right-of-way on other roads, 25 feet from the rear line and 10 feet from side lines.
- Structures stay 15 feet from either side of a power line, and 100 feet from the high-water mark on the waterfront.
The permit
- The application fee is $50 plus 5 cents per square foot, with a site plan showing all buildings, the well, septic and distances to lot lines and roads.
- Contact the Zoning Administrator once the stakes are set, before construction. The zoning permit lapses after a year unless a building permit is kept active.
In Bay Mills, you need two permits before you build. The township’s zoning permit and Chippewa County’s building permit both have to be in hand, and building without them is penalized under the zoning ordinance. We’ll make sure the drawings and site plan are ready for both reviews.
A soil erosion permit may be needed for an acre or more of excavation or for work within 500 feet of a lake or stream, so check with the county. See all of Michigan.
