What people build in Macomb Township
One of Michigan’s fastest-growing townships, with rear-yard placement and foundation rules set by building size.
Detached garages
Over 600 sq ft, a freestanding garage goes on a 42-inch footing. Smaller ones sit on a 24-inch-deep rat wall with a 4-inch slab.
Small lots
On lots of 10,000 sq ft or less, one garage up to 900 sq ft plus one other building up to 150 sq ft, and detached buildings up to 12 feet tall.
Storage buildings
Buildings under 80 sq ft and no more than 10 feet tall don’t need a township permit, but still meet the setbacks.
Attached garages
On houses over 3,000 sq ft, an attached garage can reach 30% of the house, up to 1,200 sq ft.
We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.
Permitting metal buildings in Macomb Township
Macomb Township keeps accessory buildings in the rear yard and sets the foundation by building size.
Placement
- Accessory buildings go only in the rear yard, at least 10 feet from the house and 7.5 feet from the side and rear lines, and never in an easement.
- On corner lots, they keep the principal building’s front setback from both streets.
Foundations
- Freestanding buildings of 600 sq ft or less sit on a rat wall at least 4 inches wide and 24 inches deep, with a 4-inch slab over a 4-inch sand or stone base.
- Freestanding garages over 600 sq ft go on a 42-inch footing.
The permit
- The application needs two copies of a plot plan showing the septic tank and field and the lot lines, and two copies of plans with sectional views and foundation details.
- Inspections cover the open hole and the final. No accessory building can go up before the house.
In Macomb Township, 600 sq ft decides the foundation. Up to 600 sq ft, a rat wall and slab will do. Past that, a freestanding garage needs a 42-inch footing, which changes the concrete package. We’ll plan the foundation to the building size before you order.
Lots over 10,000 sq ft follow Section 10.0331 of the township zoning ordinance, and we confirm those numbers with the Building Department for your address. We also serve Lenox Township. See all of Michigan.
