What people build in Muskegon Charter Township

A Muskegon County township with a detailed standard for residential pole barns, and engineering for anything beyond it.

Pole barns

The township’s standard covers single-story buildings up to 36 feet wide, with metal roof and wall panels and posts no more than 8 feet apart.

Wider buildings

Past 36 feet wide, or outside the standard in any other way, the plans need an engineer’s review or structural calculations.

Tall walls

Walls 12 feet and higher need an engineer’s review. Under the standard, walls top out at 16 feet and the mean roof height at 20 feet.

Shops

Exposed rigid foam isn’t allowed inside, solid fuel burners aren’t allowed, and floor drains have to drain to open air, not under the slab.

We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.

Permitting metal buildings in Muskegon Charter Township

Muskegon Charter Township won’t issue a pole barn permit without its completed structure form.

Footings

  • Every post sits on a poured concrete footing whose top is at least 42 inches below finished grade, sized to the soil and the load.
  • Footing concrete has to be at least a 2,500 lb mix, wet-mixed from an approved supplier.

Framing

  • Girts are at least 2×4 at no more than 24 inches on center, and skirt boards are treated lumber.
  • Walls need structural sheathing or 2×6 diagonal braces on each side, no more than 25 feet apart and within 12 feet of each end.

The form

  • The pole barn structure form lists sidewall and mean roof height, footing size, post size and spacing, truss carrier, roof covering and door locations.
  • A truss diagram goes in with the construction plans, and the permit won’t be issued without the form.

In Muskegon Charter Township, 36 feet wide is the engineering line. Buildings up to 36 feet wide with walls under 12 feet can follow the township’s pole barn standard. Wider or taller, and the plans need an engineer. We’ll plan the frame and drawings around those limits.
