What people build in Oshtemo Township

A Kalamazoo County township where unplatted parcels get taller buildings and more room to place them.

Detached garages

On a quarter acre or less, all detached accessory buildings can total 840 sq ft. Up to a half acre, 1,080 sq ft, and up to an acre, 1,320 sq ft.

Pole barns

From 1 to 2 acres, 2,000 sq ft, rising in steps to 6,000 sq ft at 8 to 11 acres and 7,000 sq ft over 11 acres.

Taller buildings

On unplatted parcels, accessory buildings can be 30 feet tall. In subdivisions and site condos, they can’t be taller than the house.

Front-yard buildings

Outside subdivisions and site condos, a building can sit in the front yard if it meets the district’s front setback.

We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.

Permitting metal buildings in Oshtemo Township

Oshtemo ties setbacks to building height and treats subdivisions differently from unplatted land.

Setbacks

  • Buildings of 200 sq ft or less sit 3 feet from side and rear lines. Larger buildings sit 10 feet back, or as far back as the building is tall, whichever is greater.
  • Every accessory building keeps 10 feet, wall to wall, from other structures on the property.

Location

  • In subdivisions and site condominiums, accessory buildings can’t sit closer to the street than the front of the house.
  • On other parcels, they can go in the front yard if they meet the district front setback, from both streets on a corner.

Size & height

  • The combined size of all detached accessory buildings runs from 840 sq ft on a quarter acre or less up to 7,000 sq ft on more than 11 acres.
  • Height is capped at the height of the house in subdivisions and site condos, and at 30 feet on unplatted parcels.

In Oshtemo, a taller building sits farther back. Over 200 sq ft, the side and rear setback is 10 feet or the building’s full height, whichever is more. A 24-foot pole barn needs 24 feet of clearance. We’ll set the height and placement together.

Building permit requirements vary, so we confirm with the Oshtemo Building Department for your address. Subdivisions may also have HOA or deed restrictions. We also serve Comstock Township. See all of Michigan.
