What people build in Oxford Township
A north Oakland County township that holds residential accessory buildings to the size of the house and keeps big doors off the street side.
Detached garages
In the R-1A through R-3 districts, up to 15 feet tall, and all detached buildings together can’t exceed the floor area of the house.
Pole barns
In the suburban farm and agricultural districts, buildings follow the district height of 35 feet and the district setbacks.
Big doors
On residential lots, overhead doors taller than 9 feet can’t face the front lot line.
Farm buildings
Farm operations protected by Michigan’s Right to Farm Act are exempt from the zoning ordinance, with documentation to the township.
We work in tubular steel, cold-formed steel, steel truss and red iron. See what a steel building costs.
Permitting metal buildings in Oxford Township
Oxford checks the building’s location on the ground before the plans go to the Building Official.
Placement
- Detached buildings meet the district front and side setbacks, and the front setback from both streets on a corner lot. They stay at least 10 feet from any building on the site.
- In R-1A through R-3, the rear setback is 10 feet or the height of the building, whichever is greater. Elsewhere it’s half the district rear setback.
Size & look
- Residential accessory buildings can’t have exposed block, tarpaper or plywood sheathing. Walls need a finished surface such as brick, wood, aluminum or composition siding.
- Accessory buildings count toward the district’s lot coverage limit, from 10% in the AG district to 35% in R-1.
The permit
- Plans need a wall schedule, truss spacing, corner wind bracing and a 4-inch slab on a 4-inch sand base, over a 4-by-24-inch rat wall and 42-inch footings.
- The $125 zoning compliance fee covers a staking inspection, done Tuesdays and Thursdays, before the building permit. Sealed truss diagrams are due before the rough inspection.
In Oxford, the house sets the ceiling. On residential lots, all detached accessory buildings together can’t be bigger than the house, can’t top 15 feet, and can’t put a tall overhead door on the street side. We’ll plan the door layout and size around those limits from the start.
Accessory buildings can’t be built before the house unless the Zoning Board of Appeals approves it with a cash performance guarantee. We also serve Waterford Township. See all of Michigan.
