Permitting metal buildings in Cheyenne

The city’s Unified Development Code limits how many accessory buildings a residential lot can hold and ties their size to the house.

Size

  • Residential lots can have up to two accessory buildings.
  • Their combined footprint can’t exceed the house’s, and no single one can be bigger than the house.

Placement

  • Accessory buildings can’t sit in front of the house.
  • Two structures closer than 3 feet, or structurally attached, count as one building for setbacks, size and number.

Going bigger

  • More or larger accessory buildings can be approved through conditional use review.
  • Setback relief goes to the Board of Adjustment.

In Cheyenne, the house sets the size. All accessory buildings together can’t outgrow your home’s footprint. We start from the house and size the largest shop the code allows, or plan for a conditional use review if you need more.
