Permitting metal buildings in Laramie

The city’s Unified Development Code caps the number, footprint and height of accessory buildings, with conditional use review for anything bigger.

Size & number

  • Up to two accessory buildings, with a combined footprint of 1,000 sq ft or the footprint of the largest house on the site.
  • More buildings or a larger footprint can be approved through conditional use review.

Height

  • No accessory building can be taller than the tallest house on the site or the zone’s accessory limit, such as 24 feet in R2.
  • Height variances go to the Board of Adjustment.

Placement

  • Accessory buildings sit behind the front setback line unless the City Manager’s Office approves otherwise.
  • Keep at least 5 feet from the house.

In Laramie, the house’s roofline is the ceiling. A shop can’t stand taller than your home without a variance. We check the house’s height first and pick a roof pitch and wall height that fit under it.

We also serve Centennial, Rock River and the rest of Albany County. See all of Wyoming.
