Metal buildings in Arlington, TN.

We supply shops, garages, barndominium shells and more across Arlington and northeast Shelby County. Our work reaches from in-town neighborhoods to the farm ground toward Fayette County, and anywhere else you’re building. An accessory building permit starts at Arlington Town Hall, then goes to the joint Memphis and Shelby County office for review and inspection.

These are Town of Arlington rules. Unincorporated Shelby County permits directly through the joint county office.

What people build around Arlington

Newer neighborhoods ring the old town center, and acreage and row-crop ground open up toward Fayette County.

Garages & workshops

Detached garages and shops on neighborhood lots are sized around the house and the setbacks.

Acreage shops

Tubular is hard to beat on an unfinished shop up to sixty feet wide.

Farm buildings

Equipment storage and machine sheds serve the farm ground east of town.

Finished space

Steel truss takes drywall directly, so there’s no wood wall to build inside the steel.

We also work in cold-formed steel and red iron. See what a steel building costs.

Permitting metal buildings in Arlington and Shelby County

Arlington handles zoning itself and contracts with Memphis and Shelby County for building permit review and inspections.

Inside Arlington

  • Accessory structures need a residential permit.
  • The application goes on the standard Shelby County form and is turned in at Town Hall for the town’s approval first.
  • The town then sends it to Shelby County for plan review and inspections.
  • Town Hall is at 5854 Airline Rd.

Unincorporated Shelby County

  • Outside town limits, the joint Memphis and Shelby County office issues permits directly.
  • Under the joint development code, an accessory building can’t sit in a required side yard.

Farm & engineering

  • Non-residential farm buildings are exempt from Tennessee’s state minimum standards.
  • Seismic loads near the New Madrid fault can shape the design here.
  • Our generic engineering packages are wet-sealed, and occupied buildings are Risk Category II.

Check the neighborhood’s own rules. Many Arlington neighborhoods were built as Planned Developments, so their limits on accessory buildings can differ from the base zoning map. We check the zoning and the development’s own conditions for your lot before you settle on a size.

We also serve Lakeland, Gallaway, Braden, Mason and the farm ground between them. See the Memphis metro or all of Tennessee.
